Prologue

I just stared. It's all I could do. He stared right back. After several minutes, I asked him what he was, but he responded "It's time to go." I heard some faint pounding from below. I asked him where we were and what those shadow things were, and he responded "You're running out of time." the pounding became much louder and I could see the trapdoor shaking. I asked him what was going on and what I was supposed to do. He just shook his head at me. I started to panic. The trapdoor started to splinter and the guy said, "Time's up." He walked over and threw me off of the tower. I thought about what I had gotten myself into, and how I should have just stopped at the blasted sea caves. Now, I was going to be chunky salsa at the bottom of some tower in a different world. I fell for a long time. I could see the rocky waste getting closer, but I never seemed to reach the ground. I thought about the winding tunnels, the stairs, and the impossibly high tower, and I realized that none of this had made any sense. And, then it did.
