45Chapter 2, Following the Trail
Upon arriving at the apartments, we found them abandoned and in a state of disrepair. Brian and I put on dust masks and the three of us entered into the central courtyard. We found the bodies of several of those agents we had dealt with a few weeks ago. Not good. In addition, the same black fungal matter had completely overtaken the corpses and was growing out of them into the ground. Brian used his Time magic to see what had happened in the past a few days ago at this spot. He saw Eric enter the courtyard, and several of the agents come after him. Eric's fingernails became claws and he tore up one of the agents, and then threw another one into a tree. He ran at another one and ripped into him, and the rest of the agents took off. Eric then left the area. So we had definitive evidence that this fungus was related to Eric's disappearance, but we weren't sure exactly how. In any case, we needed to stop this stuff from spreading, so we set fire to the apartment building and the courtyard, adding arson to our list of crimes.
